High Volume Transport

Vital transport research to ensure accessible, affordable and climate friendly transport for all.

Climate change is causing an increase in extreme weather events and in their severity, particularly in many LICs. These events threaten infrastructure that people depend on to live. It has become urgent to develop adaptation plans to meet the climate change challenges.

HVT programmes are providing policy level and practical support to adapt all modes of transport in LICs to meet the pressing challenges caused by climate change.

Our projects include open-data tools to identify flood risks and how to prioritise interventions to deliver sustainable and resilient long-distance transport networks; policy guides providing systematic guidance on how to scope, develop and implement climate change adaptation; and updates to Road Note 31 giving engineers detailed information on the development of roads that meet the challenges of increased temperatures, rainfall and extreme weather in LICs.
