New toolkit launched to support LMICs access climate finance

A new toolkit has been launched to support low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) to unlock climate finance. Gaining climate finance supports efforts in the transport sector to mitigate and adapt to climate change, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Yet, investment is uneven, with less than 3% flowing to the least-developed countries.

The new toolkit has been developed by the World Resource Institute (WRI) as part of an HVT-funded research project with the aim of supporting LMICs to navigate barriers to accessing climate finance funding.

The project, Improving Access to Climate Finance in Transport in Low- and Middle-Income Countries has mapped out and analysed recent developments in the climate finance landscape in LMICs. It has investigated existing constraints and provided evidence-based solutions and recommendations.

The latest part of the project includes a digital climate finance toolkit which provides an essential guide to unlocking climate finance for low-carbon transport projects. Designed for transport project sponsors, transit operators and public-sector officials, this toolkit is a one-stop resource for navigating the complex climate finance landscape.

Hosted on WRI Ross Center for Sustainable Cities program’s learning platform, this interactive toolkit provides tools and insights to overcome barriers and implement sustainable transport solutions effectively.

Inside the toolkit is:

The project also recently produced a report looking at 14 case studies in the transport sector. It examines how countries, particularly LMICs in Africa, South Asia, and Latin America and the Caribbean, access the range of financial opportunities offered by the various sources of international climate finance. This paper can help inform and shape strategies for shifting financial resources to sustainable, low-carbon transport.
