Experts in the field of low carbon transport gathered at SLOCAT’s ‘Partner’s Café’ this week, to launch the Transport Decarbonisation Index.
Following a welcome by SLOCAT’s Director of Outreach and Communications, Alice Yiu, and an overview of HVT’s work by Team Leader, Neil Ebenezer, members of the SLOCAT Secretariat presented the ‘Transport Decarbonisation Index’ (TDI), a diagnostic toolkit funded by HVT and developed to offer support to LMICs in the decarbonisation of their surface transport.
This toolkit, which takes the form of a detailed spreadsheet, provides a clear, data-driven view of where countries stand in their transition towards a sustainable, low-carbon transport future. Policymakers can use the diagnostic tools to identify both their strengths and the areas which need improvement. They can benchmark their own long-term progress towards greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction targets, compare their performance against other countries, and work towards the development of nationally determined contributions (NDCs).
This indicator assessment is combined with tailored, non-prescriptive policy advice to enable evidence-based, time-sensitive, targeted decisions on surface transport decarbonisation.
A panel of speakers from organisations including the University of California, Davis, the Wuppertal Institute, and the Centre on Global Energy Policy then discussed ways in which the TDI can serve as a catalyst for policy change, knowledge-sharing and collaborative learning.
The second part of the session offered partners the chance to present their work on reducing carbon emissions. Representatives from the World Resources Institute (WRI), the International Union of Railways (UIC) and the Kenya Urban Roads Authority were amongst those who gave updates on their research into decarbonising transport.
Access the toolkit and user guide, and also read the TDI benchmarking and methodology reports, as well as SLOCAT’s state-of-knowledge report which preceded the release of the toolkit.
