Objective
To improve the safety of older vehicles in Uganda, many of which are used imports running on old roads, subject to no inspections. Also to enable better collection of data on vehicular emission and road deaths to inform policy on transport safety and pollution control.
Potential Impact
To establish a structured vehicle maintenance regime, to collect safety and emissions data which would support policy reforms and community capacity building.
Approach
Conducting research into safer and cleaner technologies whilst providing training, support and resources to local mechanics to enable them to carry out sustainable maintenance on vehicles and cut emissions.
This is being done through:
- Community mobilisation
- Focus group discussions
- Training workshops
Outcome
The project aims to influence policy makers around clean air reform while supporting steps towards introducing meaningful standards and regulations in vehicle safety.
